Published in 2017, “Arvo Pärt’s Tabula Rasa” was the first publication in the new Oxford Keynotes Series by Oxford University Press. The series specialises in delving into the cultural contexts of individual works, and the author of the book, Kevin C. Karnes, is also the curator of the series. This book is not intended only for the small inner circle of musicologists, but for a wider audience interested in the humanities.
Toomas Siitan: “Arvo Pärt's first large composition written in the tintinnabuli style, Tabula rasa (1977) enables to shed light on many aspects of the composer’s work, while focusing on the transition period: the development of this style, and the reception of the first works written with this new technique, both in the Brezhnev-era partocratic stagnation and the Western free music market environment. In fact, Karnes does not focus on just one work, but more broadly on the phenomenal upheaval brought about by Pärt’s stylistic innovation, best represented by his concert for two violins, prepared piano and chamber orchestra.”
In recent years, music historian Kevin C. Karnes, a professor at Emory University, Atlanta, has been focused on researching Arvo Pärt’s work, also working extensively with the Centre’s archive materials.
