In the early 2000s, Arvo Pärt was commissioned by Jordi Savall to compose two lullabies for the album “Ninna Nanna ca. 1500–2002”. The first of them, Estonian Lullaby, is based on a folk tune from Jõhvi region. It is a traditional lulling for two female voices. In 2019, the composer wrote a new version for violin and piano, and dedicated it to Anne Akiko Meyers.
Arvo Pärt: “Lullabies are like little pieces of lost Paradise – a small consolation combined with the feeling of profundity and intimacy. I wrote these two lullabies for adults and for the child within every one of us.”
